What to say in your pitch

The #1 thing needed to win this contest is a solid value proposition. We'd love to learn more about who you are, what inspired you to start or grow your business using government grants, and what type of technology you have. Beyond the basics, we'd also appreciate learning more about your financial situation, specifically about how you're impacted by COVID-19 and what you plan to do to save your business and retain the jobs of your team members. If a government grant can help you achieve that, this would be a great opportunity to tell us why so we can help you deliver in your moment of need. We would also like to learn more about how your technology will impact humanity, and how it can help improve life for our Warfighters.

Our intellectual property: this is public?!

Yes, this is a public contest, meaning anyone can see the other submissions in this contest, which is required for public voting to select the most popular solution worth advising. We ask that you not disclose any sensitive information, and recommend you file patents for any unique intellectual property you want to discuss PRIOR to applying for this contest.

It is absolutely possible to talk about what your research will accomplish without revealing the sensitive details of your technology. Please reference the next section below for an example essay. As you'll see in the KFC example, we aren't asking for your secret sauce / recipe. If you need more confidentiality, you can apply to work with our team directly for a fee.  This is a contest, and we aren't charging anything, so yes, everything here is publicly viewable.

Our winner will, of course, be awarded confidentiality by all advisors; everyone that sees your intellectual property will gladly sign a non-disclosure agreement.  Most likely we will not be able to sign a non-circumvention agreement because we are helping a wide range of companies in the defense landscape, but we do not share technology without prior approval or start competing ventures using knowledge obtained from our members or clients under any circumstances.  We only accept ten paid companies to advise per SBIR cycle, and try to avoid conflicts by choosing companies in different verticals that are non-competitive.  Our monthly member brainstorming sessions are open to all member companies from all backgrounds.

The KFC Pitch Sample: No, this isn't real.

We believe a rapidly prepared source of protein delivered from a nearby off-base location will improve quality of life for Warfighters in garrison. Our solution will help save taxpayer-paid resources, increase unit readiness and morale, and reduce lost productivity by producing meals twice as fast as traditional solutions. [Value Proposition]

At [KFC subcontracted franchisee name], we know that our warfighters want to maintain optimal nutrition and be physically prepared for battle. In order to do that, our stateside Warfighters in garrison need access to quality protein on demand. The problem is that our warriors on BRAC'd bases are waiting in longer meal lines, which reduces overall productivity and decreases unit readiness due to time lost waiting in the chow hall line, making them feel stuck and frustrated. We understand what it's like to be rushed to meet a work deadline and stuck in a slow food line, which is why we've partnered with KFC to deliver hot meals to the closest military base without waiting in line. [Why it's important]

Here's how we do it:

(1) We pre-order Grade A never-frozen meat from an authorized farm

(2) We gather daily orders from service members on base via our new mobile app

(3) We prepare meals on-demand in a constantly cleaned kitchen near the base

(4) We send a trusted vetted driver to drop off hot chicken and text an estimated delivery time [How your technology works]

Our SBIR grant is focused on establishing a research study at one military base to evaluate the average timing for our warriors to enter the traditional chow hall line and obtain food, versus having food delivered to an office location at a preset time. Our study will also measure a decrease in cross-contamination due to fewer people congregating in one location en masse, which is beneficial in a pandemic situation, such as with recent COVID-19 restrictions / considerations. We will implement and measure a net-promoter score over a 90 day research period to measure perceived factors such as quality / temperature of food, customer service experience with front-line workers, and ease of access, based on direct feedback from military service members. [What your research will accomplish]

If permitted by existing contractors, we will document time savings comparing the existing Cisco Foodservice supplied kitchens to prepare the existing recipes versus using our commercially tested and proven fast-preparation recipes, which can provide valuable data regarding meal preparation at forward operating bases using KFC's solutions versus traditional chow hall recipes. Our research will not compare nutrition information or disclose proprietary recipes (formulas) used in preparing the substitute source of protein, as we believe other studies with sufficient correlation already exist in these topical areas. [Things you will / won't do]

Our research will yield data that will either prove or disprove the ability to increase distribution of a high-quality highly-available supplemental-protein food supply in lieu of constraints on the existing chow hall infrastructure due either to increased demand (increased wait times to access food) or lack of access (due to pandemic restrictions among large crowds). [What you want to study / prove]

There will be substantial commercial impact once this project is concluded. Currently our fellow citizens are losing their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving them with fewer resources than they had before. Our research will definitively prove that a fast easily-accessed good-tasting source of protein can be obtained at a cost comparatively lower than traditional restaurants. For the people who are still employed, our solution can also demonstrate the time savings quantified with accepting food deliveries versus preparing meals at home or dining in at a restaurant. [Non-Defense Commercial Impact]

We’re passionate about this project because our team has worked in the poultry industry as well as in both fast and slow service restaurants over the last 20 years, understanding there is a market gap. We have four years in the military to witness the inefficiencies related to meal preparation and consumption, and after partnering with the world leader in chicken preparation, we are now releasing a new technology solution for online ordering to military bases around the United States. [Your Experience / Why it matters / Why you care]

Our software development is sub-contracted to Scientific Business Solutions, GSA Schedule 00CORP Contract (47QRAA19D004T), and we our efforts are protected by Patent #1,234,567 for improving meal delivery with our solution. We have a relationship with Downstate University to help with research on this project. We are also discussing a partnership with Uber Eats to provide a nationwide network of delivery drivers so our team can focus instead on meal preparation and supply chain optimization. [Who your partners are]

Because no one is eating in our franchised restaurant locations right now, winning a SBIR contract may help us stabilize our cash flow so we can rehire many of the restaurant workers that we were forced to layoff, assuming the U.S. Government allows us to have an exclusive contract to optimize meal delivery and meal preparation for their military bases in the United States.  Applying for a contract will take time and effort, but we are prepared to do the work required, as we know the impact will greatly help our team. [Current business impact / financial concerns]
